The Hunter

"what are they for?" I asked, running my thumb across the three dots tattooed on his cheek. He sighed. Closed his eyes. "One for everyone I lost. One for my mother the day I was born. One for my brother the day he forced me to kill him." He pauses a moment, dropping his voice to a whisper. "One for the day I lost myself, when I murdered my own brother." Pain flashed across his black eyes, pain I recognized all too well. We were broken, both of us,  and the pieces of who we were have been lost long ago. It's why I named myself Shard so long ago; even at five I knew what it meant to be shattered.
